Linux CD Shop - Mandriva 2008 Powerpack Mandriva 2008 Powerpack Mandriva 2008 Powerpack is the commercial Linux offering from Mandriva.Com. They also provide a free version of their software called Mandriva 2008 Free. Today I am going to look at their commercial product that can be purchased here. Mandriva 2008 Poweerpack is full of excellent software packages. Out of the box you can watch DVD's, play audio files and many more things that even the seasoned veteran of Linux will enjoy.Mandriva Linux 2008 Powerpack has all of the latest Linux packages:
Installation Installing Mandriva 2008 Powerpack is a pretty easy process. It has a well guided installation process that takes no time at all to have a full working Linux system. I had no issues installing this OS to my test system.

Software It is worth noting once again that Mandriva Powerpack's software is commercial and bundled by Mandriva. But, video codec and other software that Mandriva bundles is available through other Linux OS's and with a bit of work one can pretty well accomplish everything that Mandriva Powerpack has to offer but with many more config issues. What I like about Powerpack is that it is all there and ready to use. No hard configuration is neccessary. It may be the easy way out, but nice not to do all the work. I guess that is why it is commercial and one must pay for it.

Real Life Testing I installed Mandriva on an older Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop 866 with 384 megs of ram plus a 32 meg Nividia Video card. Although the speed of which the install progressed was slow, it did make it through it. Seeing all my hardware and was up and running just fine. The issue I have had with this laptop in the past with other Linux OS's was trying to get my Dlink 650+ PCMCIA network functioning. Mandriva Powerpack has an excellent wireless configuration system. Not only did it see this card it guided me through a maze of menus to get it configured. This Dlink card needs to have the WindowsTM drivers installed to funcction, so Mandriva brought up the config tool for the famous Ndiswrapper networking assistant. Mandriva menus helped with location of the drivers ( make sure you download them ) and configured the card almost by itself.. <grin> Maybe other Linux OS's do this but I had tried on a couple of others with no luck. I was very happy to have this card up and running and Mandriva made it easy. The card has a great network connection throughout my home and never, and I mean never drops the connection. The ease of configuring this card alone made it worth the money. Conclusion Having to pay for a Linux OS is not for everyone. Mandriva has bundled many excellent tools that will help enhance every Linux user no matter what their skill level. The system is very stable, fast download repos ( at least for me ) and excellent support from their forums. Whether you want to pay for Mandriva or use their free version I feel you will not be disappointed. Both the free version and commercial version worked fine on all my test systems and I can highly reccommend it. Watch Mandriva 2008 Powerpack Flash Video webmaster - http://www.reviewlinux.com |
